The oldest photograph in the world today can be traced to 1827,it was shot by a French man Joseph Nierphillips. In the 21st century, Chinese contemporary photography stepped into the digital era from the previous film era. The pioneering and development of modern photographic technology provide a broader space for photographic art. especially the impact on photographic art from contemporary avant-garde thinking of art, provides referential art methodology to the change of thinking of experimental photography creation, The experimental photography of Fu Wenjun was incubated in such a context.

In our daily life, photography was usually regarded as a technical support of newspapers, magazines and other media . It is a form of entertainment for individuals. However, since the date it was born, photography is a unique form of modelling art. In the second half of the 19th century, the historical skeleton of this artistic genre gradually came into being, giving birth to a series of branches successively, such as, Marxism, Impressionism, Realism, Naturalism, New Realism, and abstract art. In addition, photography used to largely rely on color, exposure, and high-quality . But with the rise of contemporary art, the thoughts of contemporary art profoundly influenced contemporary photography, Photography under the guidance of contemporary art become really innovative.. Fu Wenjun, who graduated from Sichuan Academy of Arts and completed graduate studies in Macauis a pioneer in this field.

On July 6, 2010, The exhibition Go Through the Motions- historical concept photography of Fu Wenjun curated by Hu Jiujiu inBeijingTodayArt Museumis Fu Wenjun’s debut.. He exhibited two of his latest works, one isTheOldSummerPalaceand Zodiac series and the other isUniversalGardens series. With the aim to reflect the conflict between traditional Chinese culture and contemporary culture, these two series choose The Old Summer Palace and World Expo as the target of observation. Known as historical concept photography, it situates the viewer in the early modern Chinese history to facilitate their rethinking of the issue of culture and civilization. this photography with a heavy cultural property, while on the basis of retaining documentary photography, it draws distance away from documentary photography in the content organization and visual effects. In my opinion, three creative ideas have inspired the creation of these works. Firstly, the collision between Chinese traditional culture and modern culture. This sort of juxtaposition of time and space through photography will generate new visual significance. Secondly, the breakthrough in traditional photography methods.Traditional photography thinks that the photographer can no longer create photographic images for a second time, that is, a one-time snap shot image of the artist is his final work, But Fu made an innovative breakthrough. His works will usually undergo a second-time creation in the processing period. he values the tenical quality of his works, but he pays more attention on the ideological level of works. Such philosophy connects his works more closely with the avant-garde artistic thinking. Thirdly, the large size of his works. Tremendously disctinct from other form of modeling art, photography is subject to technical conditions. But Fu has overcome these limits, enlarged the size of his works, and multiplied the tension of visual arts. Doubtlessly, it is a big breakthrough to achieve this artistic effect.

Chinese photography just touched upon the experimental style of creation. We don’t have too many works that cherished the cultural depth. Fu Wenjun has been engaged in research of photographic art for a long time, updating the expressional skills on the levels of content and form. The works present in this exhibition is a step forward in academic exploration of photography.
